Christ at the Heart of Our Community

At St Aidan's Catholic Academy, chaplaincy is central to our mission of placing Christ at the heart of school life. We strive to create a welcoming, inclusive and faith-filled community where every young person is valued, respected and encouraged to grow spiritually, academically and personally. The Catholic Schools Inspectorate recognised that students benefit hugely from the commitment of all staff in providing a rich Catholic life experience and noted that students understand and embrace the school's mission to "live life to the full."

An Outstanding Chaplaincy Team

The 2023 Catholic Schools Inspectorate praised the school's highly effective chaplaincy team and highlighted the significant impact of the school chaplain. Inspectors described her dedication to the school community as extraordinary, recognising the inspiration she provides through creating opportunities for staff and students to deepen their spiritual lives. The chaplaincy team works alongside staff to foster a culture of compassion, respect, servant leadership and Gospel values.

Prayer and Liturgy

Prayer is embedded into the daily rhythm of life at St Aidan's. Each morning students participate in the Examen, providing time for reflection, gratitude and spiritual growth. Weekly Masses, liturgies and prayer opportunities throughout the liturgical year help students to deepen their understanding of faith and develop a meaningful relationship with God. Inspectors found that students demonstrate reverence during prayer and worship and that staff are highly skilled in leading prayerful experiences that help students make connections between faith and everyday life.

The school chapel plays a vital role in the spiritual life of the academy and is used regularly for worship, reflection and learning. Additional prayer spaces are available throughout the school, including dedicated provision for students of other faiths, reflecting the academy's commitment to inclusion and respect for all.

Retreats and Pilgrimage

Chaplaincy provides a range of opportunities for spiritual formation beyond the classroom. Annual retreats and pilgrimage experiences allow students and staff to deepen their faith and reflect on their relationship with God and others. A particular highlight is participation in a walking pilgrimage along part of Bede's Way, where students learn about the life of St Bede while engaging in prayer, discussion and reflection.

Living Catholic Social Teaching

Catholic Social Teaching is at the heart of chaplaincy and student leadership. Students actively support a wide range of charitable and community initiatives that put Gospel values into action. These include:

  • Supporting the school food bank and distributing hampers to local families in need.
  • Organising and contributing to homeless outreach projects.
  • Participating in weekly homeless lunches.
  • Collecting blankets and essential items for vulnerable members of the community.
  • Taking part in the school's Reverse Advent campaign.

Through these experiences, students develop a deep understanding of justice, dignity, solidarity and service, recognising their responsibility to care for others both locally and globally. Inspectors noted that students speak eloquently about the links between their actions and Catholic Social Teaching.

A Community of Inclusion and Belonging

Inclusivity is a priority at St Aidan's Catholic Academy. The school celebrates the uniqueness of every individual and ensures that all students are held in high esteem. Students of different faiths and backgrounds are welcomed as valued members of the St Aidan's family and are able to participate fully in the life of the academy. Inspectors highlighted the caring and positive environment developed by staff and students, where equality, diversity, forgiveness, reconciliation and inclusion are the norm.
