At KS3 pupils follow an in-house developed scheme of work, which is based upon the ‘Exploring Science’ materials. Pupils experience regular assessment using exam style questions and are given every opportunity to develop their practical based skills. Pupils learn to appreciate science in a wider context with a ‘How science works’ focus in teaching.

Many topics taught during KS3 touch upon social, moral and spiritual issues. So this provides pupils with several opportunities to formulate their ideas and to express them during class discussion and debate.

In science we believe that all students are able to gain at least two good GCSEs at grade 5 or above and that all students are able to embark on KS5 courses that suit their needs. In order to achieve this, the curriculum is broad and balanced and science is contextualised.

In science we believe that all students should be encouraged to develop enquiring minds. They must develop their inherent inquisitive nature to discover and explain patterns found in the natural and physical world. Students are encouraged to discover explanations for them and to put these to the test in a variety of situations.

Students engage in a wide variety of practical experiences both in the laboratory and outside in the environment. This ranges from practicing simple practical procedures to carrying out their own investigation work such as investigating the effects of packaging on vitamin C content. In engaging in these activities all students are encouraged to develop their imagination and understanding by applying scientific understanding to observed phenomena.

Students also find the relevance of the science they have been taught by visiting firms such as Seta, Hendon sewage works, Axo-nobel, blue reef aquarium, Brewlab, Sunderland Newcastle and Northumbria Universities. Here they can see the science they have been taught in action. Students engage with real life scientists from a variety of backgrounds. This particularly happens in the science club but also happens at other times within the curriculum.
