The ICT and Computer Science Department want students to understand and play an active role in the Digital World that surrounds them, not be passive consumers of opaque and mysterious technology. 

Computers are an integral part of our everyday lives affecting the way we live, think and act! We live in a computerised world whereby computers are involved in so many aspects of our lives such as travelling, work, research, entertainment, education, communication and many, many more.

At KS3 we see the importance that the new computing curriculum requires and the need for children to be able to code with confidence. Our KS3 curriculum is aiming to achieve this.
Students in Year 7 have the ability to explore Scratch where the requirement are to drag and drop blocks of code and sequence them together for an action to occur. They then move onto HTML coding where they learn basic coding to be able to create a simple webpage.  Students also cover compute theory, and develop ICT skills in the use of spreadsheets, as well as looking at how to stay safe when using the Internet.

Year 8 students are introduced to Gamemaker, again this is a drag and drop programming technique, but students thought processes are enhanced as each sequence of instructions needs to be identified and programmed. Students then move onto a simple Visual Basic tasks to carry out a question and answer scenarios before developing spreadsheet skills and extending their knowledge. They are also introduced to Python, a programming language in itself. Students learn the basic fundamentals of Python, which will give them an understanding of programming, should they choose to select Computing for a GCSE choice. Students will also use app development software, similar to Scratch, where the dragging and dropping of code blocks are required, although at a more advanced level.  GCSE Computer Theory will be developed in preparation for KS4 should they wish to continue within this subject area.
Computing, as a subject, is focused on discovering how technologies work as well as learning to use them along with the uses and implications of different technologies. Learners gain knowledge and understanding of current and emerging computer technology, allowing them to be educated users as well as learners capable of developing new programs for the future. Computing is important intellectually as is enables you to learn to be logically minded, it provides challenges for you to break tasks down to create solutions and solve problems and it allows you to develop and apply skills that are used within many real world contexts, leading to multiple career paths. Skills learnt in Computing, such as critical thinking, research, analysis, developing algorithms, logical thinking, problem solving, testing, evaluating, teamwork and collaboration can all be used to support the development and extension of knowledge in other subjects too. The importance of Computing is recognised by its inclusion in the revised English Baccalaureate. Computing is the way forward!
ICT and Computer Science is required for most future job roles such as : web Designer, engineer, web developer, architect, Games designer, digital designer, ICT Analyst, Business analyst, network manager, video artist, graphics designer and project manger are only a few.
